Kortney Norris has specialized in editorial, updos and haircolor for 5 years. Her Soul by Kortney at Salon Lofts Keystone at the Crossing is in Indianapolis, Indiana, and she’s rented there for two years. Being entrepreneurial is in her blood: the original hardware store her grandfather opened in 1954 was located right down the street from her suite.

Norris says she started styling her own hair in kindergarten, when hot rollers were all the rage. She practiced on her cousins when babysitting, learned to French braid on an afghan blanket and got $20 for her first updo at the age of 15. Starting young, she says, taught her creativity.

“I have used tissue paper to fill hair and built a mesh structure to give a bride’s hair fullness,” she says. “I have always loved wedding styling, and have taken some great classes.”

When she attended an Aveda Institute, she won a contest to join Jon Reyman on stage at the Aveda Congress with other students from around the country. She’s also taken classes with Nathaniel Hawkins and Vivienne Mackinder. Her editorial work here displays her vast range and sense of playfulness.
