Maine-based salon owner and hairstylist, Alanna York will pitch her line of hair care to the Shark Tank investors on Friday, January 8. Since 2007, York has developed, tested and perfected a handful of products specifically designed for curly hair. The line is currently sold in over 50 salons nationwide, but York hopes rebranding, a national TV debut and a potential investment will spark consumer interest in 2016.
Formerly known as Use Me! Products, Controlled Chaos promotes a socially conscious philosophy while performing at a professional level. York developed the products—specifically the Curl Crème—with feedback from hundreds of curly-haired clients from all over New England. “Not only does the curl crème fight frizz, block UV rays and smooth curls to perfection,” said York, “it’s made with organic U.S.-sourced ingredients and packaged in BPA-free bottles. Plus, one percent of all sales benefit the environment through 1% for the Planet. I want my clients to look good and feel good, but also do good for themselves and the environment.”
York also developed a hair cutting technique specialized for curly hair. Aptly named the Controlled Chaos hair cut, the technique is a result of her own experience: “Curls have always been synonymous with ‘cute.’ I hate that. I want sexy spirals, not cute curls,” she said. “I set out to change the stigma with a precision hair cut for all types of curly hair.”
When York auditioned for the popular TV show in July, she didn’t expect to hear back. “It was our third try so I tried not to get too excited,” she admitted. “I remember saying ‘I think I’m going to throw up!’ to the producers that called to give me the fantastic news.” To prepare for pitching, York was much more relaxed than her previous two auditions. “I had decided to close up shop last winter, and I didn’t have much energy left for something that could be so disappointing. So, I kept it simple and made a quick video, when I had gone all out with the previous two auditions.”
“It was the most surreal and nerve-wracking experience,” added York. “I was so worried that I would draw a blank and I was shaking like a leaf, but I tried to appear as cool, calm and collected as possible.” Curious to see if she secured an investment for Controlled Chaos?
