THE EVENT
The Professional Beauty Association’s 2017 North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) ceremony, hosted Eden Sassoon, July 9 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

THE DETAILS
The event opened with a red-carpet reception followed by the awards ceremony and capped off with an after party.

MODERN editors Alison Alhamed and Maggie Mulhern were on a bustling red carpet before the ceremony
and interviewed finalists for a MODERN SALON livestream. Finalists showed off their collections for the camera and shared their inspiration and process (you can see the video on MODERN’s Facebook page).

PRESENTATIONS
In addition to stunning presentations from 2016’s Hairstylist of the Year Matt Swinney, Beauty Underground and Living Proofteam Aveda with Global Creative Director Antoinette Beenders made an all-but-literal splash with a water-centric presentation complete with bedazzled finger waves and clear, structural wardrobe mimicking water.

Moroccanoil produced doll-like models inspired by Russian artists the Popovy sisters.

“They’re Russian girls who make dolls look like humans, so we thought, what if we made humans who look like dolls?” said Kevin Hughes, Moroccanoil artistic director.

Mizani’s presentation, helmed by Global Artistic Director César Ramirez, celebrated texture in movement, dancing and hair.

“Texture is in the sand; texture is in the movement of hands; texture is dancing,” said Digital and PR Manager Nasrin Pak. “Hair textures is transversal—texture doesn’t have skin color.”

Alhamed and Mulhern were honored with presenting the award for Nail Professional of the Year to Rochelle Dingman of Shear Fashion Salon in San Jose, California.

SAVE THE DATE
NAHA 2017 will be July 29, 2018 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.
