Going from dark to light isn’t as simple as your client may think. “Realistically it’s important to know that sometimes it may take separate sessions to get where you want to go," says Marshall Hatley, master stylist at Tangerine Salon. "Whether that means multiple highlight sessions every 4 to 6 weeks, or sometimes several bleaching treatments in one, or several weeks in a row."

If you have a client with virgin hair the process will be easier and take less time. However, if they have hair that's already processed with lots of dark dyes, it will take a lot longer. They may have to face the reality that they're not going to achieve their desired look within one session.

In any case, make sure you’re doing a full consultation with your client before you start the blonding process. Is your client’s hair healthy enough to go through a lightening process? Clear up any questions or concerns before you start so you're both on the same page.
