Everything You Need to Know About Volume lashes
Q: What are Volume lashes and which clients benefit most?
Sarah: Volume lashes, or Russian Volume lashes, is a technique that allows the application of multiple single strand eyelash extensions to one natural lash while maintaining the health and safety of the client’s natural lashes. They are accomplished by using extra thin eyelash extensions (.03, .05 or .07) with a tweezer designed specifically for freehand, off-the-tray pickup. Volume lashes typically consist of anywhere between two and five hairs per fan otherwise known as 2D, 3D, 4D or 5D. Additionally, a low viscosity adhesive specified for Volume lashing is utilized for this technique.
Q: Which clients benefit most from Volume lashes?
Sarah: Volume lashes are perfect for clients who have sparse lashes, bald spots or for achieving a more dramatic look without using a thicker lash, resulting in a full, lush lash line that appears fluffy and soft. Most everyone can wear Volume lashes but take the same precautions you would for classic eyelash extensions and always communicate the risks and materials used before proceeding. Every client is different, and if a client doesn't have the natural lashes to support Volume, consider doing a hybrid set.
Q: Why is this technique so popular?
Sarah: Lashes are addictive--we always want more! Volume lashes are glamorous, making them a must-have for makeup lovers. Another reason Volume lashes are so popular is that when applied well they can feel lighter-weight and softer than some classic applications.
Q: What makes the Volume lash technique different from other techniques?
Sarah: The materials used are different, and the technique is much more advanced then classic application. When learning volume fans, artist often say it feels like learning a completely different service.
Q: What are your best practices for achieving this technique?
Sarah:
- Use a jade stone pallet. Make a dome shape with your glue. Dip the base of the fan conservatively into the very top of the dome. This will help keep glue low on the fan and off your tweezers.
- Practice deep breathing when making fans by hand. The hairs will react to the energy in your body. If you are tense or anxious, it will be reflected in your hands. Don't be afraid to sit up for a moment to reset. A drink of water will also calm you down quickly, so you can return to a state of ease and flow.
- Be patient mastering your craft. Don't be in a hurry to go from student to practitioner. Infinite patience with yourself tends to shorten the time it takes to learn. Rushing can result in bad habits such as too tight fans or dangerous bonding.
- Practice during down time. Even master artists go back and practice making fans. Take 10-15 minutes--just you, the glue and a sponge—to set yourself up to improve without the pressure of working on a client. Also, a sponge-full of beautiful fans makes a great social media post!
- Use great products. The best artists require the support of quality volume products.
Q: What are some common mistakes made with this technique and what are the “fixes?”
Sarah: The most common mistake is rushing. People must understand this art takes time, especially handmade fans. I meet many artists who are hard on themselves because they think they are slow. There is a real misconception in our industry that other artists are faster. This can lead to tight fans and dangerous glue bonds. Also, be sure to invest in a teacher or mentor. Self-training is a mistake because we don’t always see ourselves clearly.
Q: What are your top home care recommendations for this service?
Sarah: I recommend a foaming eyelash shampoo + conditioner like Glad Lash Wash and Wink Eyelash Shampoo Conditioner. It’s not just because I love all things Glad Lash, this lash wash is divine. My clients wash three times per week--more often if they wear heavy makeup. People should use the soft brush to gently clean from lash line out and rinse. Then use a hand fan with a silicone spool to brush lashes into place while the lashes dry. NOTE: Use silicone spoolies on Volume lashes; other fibers might tear the extensions.
Q: How do you promote your lash services?
Sarah: My go-to promotion strategy has always been through community service. I believe you should get involved in something you are passionate about and your people will come. For example, donate a gift certificate to a silent auction supporting something you believe in. While we all know social media is important, in this digital age, people are starving for human connection! So, go out in the world and shine your light, without trying to 'get something.' I also advise people to stay away from discount client sourcing. On the other hand, a gift certificate donation states your full worth and results in clients that are happy to pay full price.
