Editor’s Note

I pen this—my final Editor’s Note—as I prepare to move on to my next chapter in life, full of so many emotions.

I reflect on all the moments and experiences this platform has provided me the past 12 years. I’ve had the most incredible opportunities serving as your Editor in Chief, from photoshoots and Fashion Week; to traveling the globe as a journalist and educator; judging competitions; speaking on panels, podcasts and TV shows; hosting red carpets; interviewing celebrities; and sampling transformative products and services before they launch.

But the best part, what gets me excited every morning, is connecting with the people of this beautiful industry: My brilliant, creative and passionate teammates who put their hearts into everything they touch; the talented content creators we discover through our 1 million-strong Instagram community; the brave leaders of our industry’s most disruptive brands; my network of trusted sources on all-things formulas, technique and trend; and mostly you, the hairdressers who give clients the confidence to hold their heads high, changing the lives of the people who sit in your salon chair.

I can’t stress it enough: People are at the heart of everything we do here at MODERN SALON and you are a huge reason why I end each day so fulfilled, and ready to hit the ground running each morning.

In a time where we are so bombarded with information—what to do, what to sell, rebooking, retailing, upselling, retaining, posting, hashtagging—remember why we got into this business. What you have every day, multiple times a day, is the opportunity to change lives, to touch people and have a personal impact on the way they present themselves to the world.

No words ring truer to this profession than the late Maya Angelou’s quote: “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

Be proud of what you do—you truly make the world a more beautiful place.

As Carlos Valenzuela says on page 32, “I am pieces of all the people I have met, taught and loved.” Thank you for continuing to welcome MODERN into your lives as you navigate your careers, and for allowing me to serve you these past 12 years.
