For beauty professionals who are natural caretakers, this time of keeping our distance, hands off and masks on, can feel especially unnerving. Yet, we know that we’ve never been more connected; what is happening to us as a result of the outbreak of COVID-19 is happening to everyone, all over the world. As we in the beauty industry collaborate on flattening the curve, we also commiserate on salon shutdowns, futures put on hold, and fears of financial insecurity. We may be keeping our physical distance from each other, but we are having the ultimate shared experience and have, ironically, never been closer.
During this unprecedented moment in our history, we are working with you to find solutions, some sense of security and the silver linings (and, no, I don’t mean the grey now framing my face 😊) in a world turned upside down. We are grateful, too, for mentors and leaders, for people with big brains and giving hearts, who help guide us through this crisis.
Carlos Valenzuela is a longtime blogger for MODERN SALON, and he recently let the coronavirus know that it would not get the better of stylists: “This situation, no matter how scary, will not define our future. Here’s why: at first, the shock of your attack on our lifestyle was overwhelming and threw us off balance. But what you don’t know is that there is a quality of creativity which is solution focused and always comes to our aid. We just don’t do well in a bad situation because our creativity depends on the right environment to thrive. So, we quickly reject bad vibes, jobs, relationships and situations. Within two or three days, our creative minds move past a problem and into some sort of a solution—even if temporary.”
This shift--from problem to solution--helps us feel some sense of control when so much is beyond our power to manage. Antony Whitaker formulated a plan to take us from fear into action ( See pages…) and to help us prepare for a return to the salon.
And to lift us above the worries of everyday and into the realm of wonder and possibility, the Ulta Beauty Pro Team shares their collaborative collection, “Fresh Aire.” These otherworldly images inspire and delight and are exactly what we need right now.
We know this is an emergency from which we will emerge with our bonds of connection that much stronger. As we said last month and will say, again and again… take care of yourself and of each other. We’re in this together.
