Welcome! This issue is full of big, beautiful reveals, and we couldn’t be more excited to share them in our pages.
Inside, you’ll join in our annual celebration of 100 beauty professionals who are moving our industry forward, the MODERN SALON 100. This list of “gamechangers” is compiled of those upping the ante in the beauty landscape with their artistry and their influence. We asked them to share some of their best tips for engagement, why they think their audience follows them, and what they love about their career.
To that last question, Hunter Donia (@hairbyhunty), says, “When I was younger and coming into my own as a young gay man, I started to express myself through my nails, makeup, and hair. It made me feel like I was appropriately expressing who I was on the inside on the outside. To be able to give that gift to my community is a blessing and privilege that I don’t take lightly.”
Chrystal Graves-Yazici (@Chrystalhairandmakeup) says her audience is following along as she works to move the conversation about DEI beyond just talk. “Right now, my main focus is on diversity, equity and inclusion, and the work we, as a beauty industry, need to focus on to create more welcoming and safe spaces for our clients.”
And speaking of gamechangers, self-expression and welcoming spaces, we couldn’t be more honored to have collaborated with the Ulta Beauty Pro Team on a stunning photo shoot that features models who identify as transgender or non-binary, including our beautiful cover model, Dominique. This is a first for us and we are proud to be part of breaking down barriers.
Nadia Stone, a District Services Educator for Ulta Beauty in Tucson, AZ, participated in the planning of the shoot, but was also invited to step in front of the camera. “I was just happy to be involved because I knew this was going to be HUGE, but when they asked me to be a model… it made my year. It was the most amazing thing. I felt so beautiful, and it was incredible to capture the power that we felt that day.” (Hear an interview with Nadia at the QR code below on what she calls her “journey to womanhood.”)
The big moments and breaking news continue (page 8) with the announcement of the winners of the North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA). Truly, these images illustrate why this competition is often called “The Oscars of Hair,” because each deserves a standing ovation.
Let me wrap with a great quote from one of our MODERN SALON 100, nail artist Sigourney Nuñez (@nailartbysig), on what she loves about her job: “The professional beauty world is big enough for all of us to succeed and if everyone’s craft is elevating, then ultimately we raise the standards of the industry.”
