How to Correctly Use Dry Shampoo on Color Treated Hair

Moroccanoil recently announced a version of its Dry Shampoo available in a limited-edition size of 8.2 OZ. / 300 ml — a 45% increase over the full size for the same price of $26. Now that’s how you start summer with a bang!

Developed to address the special needs of different hair tonalities, Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo features two color-specific formulas: one to preserve the integrity of blonde and light-colored hair, and one to maintain the richness and dimension of darker hues. To bring out the best in blonde and light-colored hair, Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo Light Tones features subtle violet undertones to help balance brassiness. On darker hair, traditional dry shampoos may leave behind a chalky residue that diminishes natural shine; however, Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo Dark Tones is formulated with ultra-fine rice starches that break down and dissipate immediately upon application, to enhance the natural richness of brunette and dark-colored hair.

All this dry shampoo talk got us thinking. What are the dos and don’t of dry shampoo when you have color treated hair? We spoke with Moroccanoil celebrity hairstylist, Bryce Scarlett (@brycescarlett), for his expert recommendations.

Here’s the first thing to know: “People with color-treated hair should always be cautious of drying out their hair. A dry shampoo with a low alcohol content is always safest,” Scarlett says.

Of course, it’s great if you and your clients can pick a dry shampoo that focuses on the key needs for your hair color – like how the Light Tones Dry Shampoo features violet undertones to help manage that pesky brass. Scarlett recommends “spraying dry shampoo directly on a note bristle brush and brushing it through the hair for even distribution.”

Dry shampoo can extend a wash by two days or more, but Scarlett doesn’t recommend sleeping with it in the hair for more than two nights as it can leave hair brittle. “You should be using dry shampoo whenever it’s necessary but keep in mind not to leave them in for too many days, as that can be drying,” he explains.
