Take a moment to "explore" hair-related hashtags on Instagram and you'll see that braids, fingerwaves and updos are some of the most “liked” and followed hashtags on social media—and for good reason. Hairdressers are having fun with hair again—taking the foundations of dressing hair and creating contemporary designs fit for any occasion.
So for this issue of MODERN, we challenged artists from across the country to create a fresh approach to special-occasion styling that ditched dated finishes, and put a beautiful, trendy twist on updos that can be formal and flowing; chic but effortless—just in time for prom and bridal season
It begins on our cover, with Daniel Roldan’s upgraded and updated basketwoven chignon. See how he accepted our updo challenge and learn to recreate the style.
Although it certainly takes skill, it also takes tools and products to create the perfect look. This issue features everything from the irons to create foundation-forming texture, root-boosting volumizers for the right grip and height effect, and various accessories to top off the look (including top retailers to help the look last all night).
And when she’s not “born with it,” hair extensions can be the perfect complement to your updo know-how. See creative ways to use extensions.
Are you ready to take an updo challenge?
