UPDOs and DON'Ts
From The Editor

I was recently at the home of one of my favorite colorists, Chicago-based Alexis Bills, @chicolorist19, and looking at her beautiful framed photos on her wall. To celebrate her recent nuptials, she hung striking black and whites of her wedding, surrounded by framed photos of her extended family on their respective wedding days.

It wasn’t just a classic family portrait wall; it was a retrospective tour through fashion and beauty trends of decades past.

I loved looking at the texture and silhouettes of all the bridal styles—her mother, her mother in-law, siblings and grandmother. For Alexis’ look, it was particularly memorable because she looked as though she could be dropped into any decade and be described as classic yet also on-trend—a vast contrast to the other women’s looks on the wall.

Perhaps it’s because our generation has pored through enough family wedding albums of gigantic puffy sleeves, pink bridesmaid dresses and permed bangs that contemporary brides are gravitating toward looks that feel more timeless. Or maybe it’s because Pinterest and Instagram have opened our eyes to versatile styling possibilities.

For Alexis, a MODERN SALON Artist Connective member and colorist at 4 Elements salon in Chicago, she credits hair extensions—lots of them—for giving her the dream hair she desired for her wedding day.

The other major contributor to her looking so great? Confidence.

Freelance Chicago bridal stylist Amanda Diedrich, @blohaute, once told us that the key to making a bride look and feel like her best self is to not go rogue.

“If a client says she never wears her hair up but is thinking an updo will be perfect for her wedding day, try to steer her in another direction,” she said. Diedrich said that something totally out of your bride’s comfort zone does not bode well for her feeling at ease on an already-hectic day.

Try to have your bridal guest schedule her hair trial, an essential, on the same day she has a dress fitting or the morning before a special occasion, so she can test-drive the look with either her gown or at an event where she’ll be photographed looking and feeling great.

And, don’t forget about the bling! A well-placed hair accessory can elevate a finished look from incomplete and tousled, to finished and memorable. Whether it’s adding the final touch on a bride or taking a look from day to night, hair jewelry adds an unexpected sparkle. See page 32 for tips on selection and placement.
