The Great Equalizer
From the Editor

Throughout this issue, you’ll see we mention Instagram quite a bit. Of course, the platform allows for a hyper-visual way for us to see and share stunning work from the professional beauty community, but it’s also an incredible resource for us to discover new talent and emerging trends.

In Fresh Air on page 42, learn how a hashtag led us to be the first U.S. media to showcase AirTouch Highlighting, a technique born in Russia that uses a blow dryer to take the work—and over-processing—out of a balayage retouch (which, thanks to the virality of our article, is quickly being embraced in salons across the country).

In our Service Spotlight on page 32, we focus on The Platinum Card technique. We were introduced to several artists’ talent simply because they posted their beautiful foil work and used a hashtag we happened to be exploring.

In Stylist Spotlight on page 38, meet Shannon Romano, an artist we stumbled upon on Instagram who hand-paints wefts of hair to create elaborate works of art inspired by pop culture and street art.

Our MODERN SALON Artist Connective spotlights artists using their platforms to educate and trial new products and tools—see the content they’re sharing on pages 40, 50 and 60.

It used to be to get pro beauty name-drop status, not only did you have to live on the coasts, you had to have major connections. Social has leveled the playing field to access, to client reach, industry notoriety and opportunities to collaborate.

Throughout this issue, the impact of having this direct line of communication to professionals across the globe is apparent. These artists aren’t necessarily in classrooms or on stages (yet!), but their strength in education and expertise is deserving of recognition.
