Busy Is Good
A couple months ago, when in the middle of planning for our MODERN SALON Independent Bootcamp in Tampa (see pages 40-41), sometimes I would find myself starting to complain about “being so busy” and then would pause, catch myself, and finish with, “but busy is good.”
I don’t mean the kind-of busy that is soul-sucking and without any forward movement. What we describe as “busy work,” because it’s only a show of being productive. That kind of busy—no buena.
But this was the kind of busy that meant we were attending one live event after the other, where the industry was out in full force (see pages 38-39). This is “busy” energy that proves the rule (adapted for purposes of my theme): “An industry in motion stays in motion.”
Busy Giving Back
Jim Marcks, president of Brava Salon Specialists in Madison, WI, and his team have been very busy, lately. They have been connecting with hundreds of salons in Ukraine.
"We created a website and worked for weeks to develop a database of salons there," Marcks shared with us. "With over 600 salons so far, US salon teams now have the opportunity to help and to 'adopt' a specific Ukrainian salon and to fundraise on their behalf.”
At ChangeisCalling.com, the website they designed, US salons can find marketing material to promote their efforts and communicate it to salon guests. Any funds or “change” they contribute will promote change in the lives of Ukrainian salon professionals and their families. Marcks suggests that salons set up donation boxes for clientele to offer their financial support.
"This plan will get 100% of the money directly into the bank accounts of hairdressers in Ukraine," Marcks says. "Donations have been very gratefully received by these Ukrainian hairdressers who are able to use the money to purchase medicine, pet food, first-aid kits, food, clothing, water, and shelter. Remember: $50 US = $150 in Ukraine."
Marcks says that interested salons may call his office at 608-268-6529 and they will match your salon, based on your salon size and the size of the salon in Ukraine.
Then you can get busy giving back. Muy buena.
